Information we collect

If you sign up for updates.We collect the email address you give us, and the date you submitted it. We use it only to send occasional updates about the walkway and the app's launch. Every email includes an unsubscribe link, and you can ask us to remove you at any time by writing to info@veteranswalkway.ca.

When you visit this website. Our host records standard server logs (IP address, browser type, pages requested) for security and reliability. If analytics are enabled, we use aggregate measurement to understand which pages people read. We do not use advertising cookies or cross-site tracking.

When you use the mobile app.The app can use your device's location to show where you are on the map and to notify you when you are near a medallion. This happens on your device: your location is used to draw the map and measure distance to nearby medallions, and we do not store your location on our servers or build a history of where you have been. You can refuse location access and still use every story, map and search feature — you simply won't get proximity notifications. Your chosen language and whether you have seen the introduction are stored locally on your device.

Service providers

We rely on a small number of providers to run the project. Each receives only what it needs to do its job:

• Vercel — website hosting and server logs.
• Sanity — the content management system that stores the stories, images and audio. It holds no information about you.
• Zapier — receives newsletter sign-ups and passes them to our mailing list.
• Mapbox — supplies the map. When the map is displayed, Mapbox receives the map area being viewed in order to send the right tiles.
• Algolia — powers in-app search. It receives the search terms you type.
• Google Analytics — aggregate website measurement, where enabled.

Some of these providers process data outside Canada, including in the United States, where different privacy laws apply.

Children

The walkway is intended for a general audience, including classrooms. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children. The newsletter sign-up is intended for adults.

Your choices

• Unsubscribe from emails using the link in any message, or by writing to us.
• Turn location access off in your device settings at any time.
• Ask us what personal information we hold about you, and ask us to correct or delete it.
